From Middle Persian ʾncyl (anjīr, fig). Cognates found in Sogdian ʾncyr (anjēr) and Kurdish hejîr. From the same Middle Iranian source, this word has been borrowed into Turkish incir, Russian инжир (inžir) and Sanskrit अञ्जीर (añjīra).
