Etymology

From Old Turkic 𐰠 (él, a union of tribes), from Proto-Turkic *ēl (peace; country, people). Compare Turkish el, Yakut ил (il, peace). Related to Proto-Mongolic *el (peaceful; relatives). Also related to Proto-Tungus-Manchu *elke ("peaceful", "silent"). According to the controversial Altaic theory, all of these are from the Proto-Altaic root *ḗlV.[1]
