Etymology
From Old Turkic 𐰠 (él, “a union of tribes”), from Proto-Turkic *ēl (“peace; country, people”). Compare Turkish el, Yakut ил (il, “peace”). Related to Proto-Mongolic *el (“peaceful; relatives”). Also related to Proto-Tungus-Manchu *elke ("peaceful", "silent"). According to the controversial Altaic theory, all of these are from the Proto-Altaic root *ḗlV.[1]
