Etymology

Borrowed from Ancient Greek πηλός (pēlós, “clay”), or ἰλύς (ilús, “mud, slime”) with the Coptic ⲡⲓ- (pi-) masculine singular definite article, though ἰλύς (ilús, “mud, slime”) is feminine and would require ϯ- (ti-); originally this word has been applied especially for the alluvial deposit of the Nile.
