Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *śapat- (“lip”). Compare also Akkadian 𒅻 (šaptu), Classical Syriac ܣܶܦ݂ܬ݁ܳܐ‎ (sep̄ṯā), Ugaritic 𐎌𐎔𐎚 (špt) and Arabic شَفَة‎ (šafa).
