Etymology

From קַלְמָרִין‎ (kalmarín), used in Mishnaic times, a sort of ink well, from Ancient Greek καλαμαριών (kalamariṓn). Related to κάλαμος (kálamos, “a reed; anything made of reed or cane (staff, rod; measuring rod; pen; flute; shaft of an arrow); collectively, of plants, which are neither bush, nor tree”) from which English calamari is also derived.
