עקדיש

Yiddish

Etymology

From Middle High German egedëhse, from Old High German egidehsa (lizard). The shift in meaning is found in various High German dialects; the irregular change from Middle High German hs to Yiddish š, rather than the expected *ks, is particular to Yiddish, and may have been spread by biblical translations into the vernacular.

Noun

עקדיש (ekdish) m, plural עקדישן (ekdishn)

  1. scorpion (any of various arachnids of the order Scorpiones)
