Formed in Mishnaic times from סְפוֹג (s'fóg, “sponge”), from Ancient Greek σπόγγος (spóngos) or σφόγγος (sphóngos).

סָפַג • (safág) (pa'al construction)
- to absorb ("to suck up or drink in").
- to absorb ("to include so that it no longer has separate existence").
- to receive something negative.
- הסרט ספג הרבה ביקורות רעות. ― The film received a lot of bad reviews. ― haséret safág harbé bikórót raút.
- (sports) to have a goal capture by the opposing team (in sports such as football or hockey.)
