Hebrew

Etymology 1

From Aramaic; related to native Hebrew שָׂב (sav).

Noun

סָב (sav) m (plural indefinite סָבִים, singular construct סַב־, plural construct סָבֵי־, feminine counterpart סָבָה)

  1. An elderly man; an aged or old man.
  2. A grandfather: the father of a parent.
  3. An old wise man.
Usage notes
  • Though historically the primary sense was “old man” or “old wise man” (in which sense it was used also as an adjective), in modern use the primary sense is “grandfather”.
