From Old High German līhan, from Proto-Germanic *līhwaną.
Usage notes
For both senses, the object being lent is in accusative and the person in the dative, with the sense borrow being often disambiguated by using the preposition בײַ (bay) before the person. The past participle געליגן (gelign) is also used.
