טִלְפֵּן or טִלְפֵן • (tilpén or tilfén) (pi'el construction)

1. To telephone, to phone, to call (via the phone).

   טלפנתי אליו, אבל הוא לא ענה.‎ — tilfánti eláv, avál hu lo aná. — I called him, but he didn’t answer the phone.

• According to traditional grammar, the פ should have a dagesh lene, and therefore should be pronounced /p/. (Compare פִּטְפֵט‎ (pitpét), בִּזְבֵּז‎ (bizbéz), and so on.) Nonetheless, it is usually pronounced /f/, like in טלפון‎ (télefon).
• Colloquially, הִתְקַשֵּׁר‎ is more commonly used.
