Mishnaic: possibly via Aramaic דפתרא / ܕܦܬܪܐ (dptrʾ, “hide; account book”), form Ancient Greek διφθέρα (diphthéra, “prepared hide, piece of leather; anything made of leather”). Compare with Arabic دَفْتَر (daftar, “register; notebook”)
