From Proto-Semitic *dalt (door), from Proto-Afro-Asiatic *dawul- (door ~ fence). Cognate with Akkadian 𒅅 (daltu), Ugaritic 𐎄𐎍𐎚 (dlt), and Aramaic דַּלְתָּא, and more distantly with Egyptian ˤrt.
