From Middle High German bruch, from Old High German bruh, ablaut form of brehhan, whence ברעכן‎ (brekhn, “to break”). The expected vowel in Yiddish is -u-, but the form may have been influenced by the past participle געבראָכן‎ (gebrokhn, “broken”). Compare German Bruch.
