בענקען
Yiddish
Etymology
Possibly derived from Middle High German bange (“anxious”) or the noun benge (“anxiety”), which are related with Middle High German enge (“narrow”), whence Yiddish ענג (eng). The sense “to yearn” is attested for the equivalent German bangen (usually “to be anxious”). Compare also German beengen (“to cramp, to corset”).
