Etymology

The original spelling is աւգն (awgn), from Parthian *abi-gūna-. Derivation from Proto-Indo-European *auw-, from *au- (to like, to help), with Sanskrit अवति (avati, to be pleased with, to like) and Latin aveo as cognates, is less likely. See also օգուտ (ōgut).
