From Iranian *tanǰ- (“suffering”). Compare Persian تنجیدن (tanjīdan, “to squeeze, to draw tight”), Middle Persian [script needed] (tanǰišn, “punishment, fine”). Related to թանկ (tʿank) and թանձր (tʿanjr).
