From Parthian *vān-, from Old Iranian *wāhana- (“habitation”), from Proto-Iranian *Hwah-; see there for more. The Old Iranian word is cognate with Sanskrit वसन (vasana, “dwelling, abiding, sojourn, residence”).

Probably not related to the city-name Վան (Van).
