Old Armenian

Etymology

First attested in 1787, of uncertain origin.

According to some, e.g. Malxaseancʿ, of onomatopoeic origin, from the sound made when sipping coffee. Typologically compare Hungarian szürcsöl (to slurp, sip), also of onomatopoeic origin. Rejected by Ačaṙyan. J̌ahukyan is more optimistic.

Urišean derives from Arabic سُلْج (sulj, a delight swallowed with food).
