Etymology

Uncertain. Ačaṙyan considers a Semitic borrowing, comparing Arabic ظَلِيم (ẓalīm, male ostrich), plural ظِلْمَان (ẓilmān). This is however a transparent Arabic-only formation, the first consonant of which corresponds to /sˤ/ in Akkadian and Northwest Semitic, /tˤ/ in Aramaic.

In the dialects recorded only as Kharberd չայլամ (čʿaylam, a kind of bird) and Sivas ջՙայլամ (ǰʿaylam, used for comparing to something very tall), e.g. ջՙայլամի պէս բան մՙէ (ǰʿaylami pēs ban mʿē, it is a ǰʿaylam-like thing).
