From the figurative use of պարտիմ (partim, I owe).

Verb

պարտեմ (partem)  (aorist indicative պարտեցի)

  1. (transitive) to worst, to overcome, to vanquish, to conquer, to subjugate, to subdue
    պարտել զչարչարանսpartel zčʿarčʿaransto suffer with fortitude, to bear up against pain or torments
  2. (in the mediopassive, intransitive) to be conquered, to have the worst of it
    յապշութիւն պարտելyapšutʿiwn partelto be confounded, astounded, astonished, surprised
    պարտեցաւ պատերազմնpartecʿaw paterazmna part was subdued
