From Proto-Indo-European *h₃orǵʰ-i- + (-kʿ). Cognates include Ancient Greek ὄρχις (órkhis), Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌 (ǝrǝzi, testicles), Hittite [script needed] (arki-, testicle), Albanian herdhe, and Middle Irish uirgge (testicle). See also որձ (orj), յորձ (yorj). Proto-Georgian-Zan *werʒ₁- may be an Armenian borrowing.
