According to Martirosyan perhaps from Old Armenian մատն (matn, “finger”). The semantic transfer from body-part terms into topographical ones is trivial. Alternatively, from Arabic متن‎ (matn, “plateau”).

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *mh₁-d-, from *meh₁- (“to measure”), and cognate with the Celtic word for “thumb”; compare Breton meud, Welsh bawd (“thumb”).
