Borrowing from Iranian. Compare Middle Persian 𐭡𐭩𐭥𐭧 (BYRḤ /māh/, moon), 𐫖𐫀𐫍𐫏𐫃𐫀𐫗 pl (mʾhygʾn /māhīgān/, month). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *mā́Hah.
