Through assimilation from earlier *ծանաչեմ (*canačʿem), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥h₃ské-, from *ǵneh₃- (to know).

Possible traces of the meaning ‘sign, omen’ can be seen in ծիածան (ciacan) and ծանակ (canak); for this meaning compare Russian знак (znak).
