From Middle Armenian *հերթ (*hertʿ) (compare attested հերթով (hertʿov)), from Old Armenian *հերթ (*hertʿ) or *հերդ (*herd), from Proto-Indo-European *ser-t-, from *ser- (to bind, put together).
