Etymology

J̌ahukyan following Bailey derives from Iranian, together with կարճ (karč, short). Compare Khotanese [script needed] (ke̮ca, cleft, ravine), for which Bailey reconstructs *kart-čā- or *kirsta-, from the base kart- (to cut), whence Persian کارد (kârd, knife).
