Etymology

From early Middle Persian hwltyk' (xvartīk, xvardīg, food). Compare Persian خوردی (xvardī, xordī, soup, food). These derive from Proto-Iranian *hwar- (to eat, consume), whence another borrowing խորակ (xorak, kind of pastry). See Persian خوردن (xordan, to eat, drink) for more.
