երագազ

• արագազ (aragaz)

A tabooistic transformation of earlier *երազգ (*erazg), borrowed from Parthian *razg/*ragz or Old Persian *razga-, from Proto-Indo-European *rezg- (“to waive, to plait”). Cognates include Latin restis, Lithuanian regzti, Russian розга (rozga), Sanskrit रज्जु (rajju, “rope”). The word is also attested as երազգայից (erazgayicʿ), ablative case of *երազգայք (*erazgaykʿ), a nominative plural formed from *երազգայ (*erazgay), the old genitive/dative of *երազգ (*erazg). The old instrumental *երազգաւ (*erazgaw) is attested in the toponym Երազգաւորս (Erazgawors).
