From Old Armenian դարբին (darbin).

Pronunciation

Noun

դարբին (darbin)

  1. blacksmith, smith

Declension

Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is disputed. Perhaps a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate word related to Latin faber. Derivation from Proto-Indo-European *dʰabʰ- (to put together, fit) is also possible; in that case cognate with Latin faber and Proto-Slavic *dobrъ. Has been also linked with Sumerian [script needed] (tabira, joiner), Hurrian [script needed] (tabiri, metal founder).

Noun

դարբին (darbin)

  1. blacksmith

Usage notes

In some attested passages Martirosyan sees the additional sense “heathen priest; poet”, which possibly originates from the Indo-European tradition.
