Old Armenian
Etymology
The origin is disputed. Perhaps a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate word related to Latin faber. Derivation from Proto-Indo-European *dʰabʰ- (“to put together, fit”) is also possible; in that case cognate with Latin faber and Proto-Slavic *dobrъ. Has been also linked with Sumerian [script needed] (tabira, “joiner”), Hurrian [script needed] (tabiri, “metal founder”).
Usage notes
In some attested passages Martirosyan sees the additional sense “heathen priest; poet”, which possibly originates from the Indo-European tradition.
