դամբուլ

Armenian

Alternative forms

  • տա̈մբո̈ւլ (tämbül) Karabakh
  • դամբիլ (dambil) Ararat

Etymology

The origin is unknown. In view of the Karabakh form with տ- (t-) the word is old. Related to Udi дампӏул (damṗul), dialectal Avar дамбу́ли (dambúli, plum) and perhaps to Middle Armenian դամոն (damon, damson plum).[1] Nikolayev / Starostin propose a native Northeast Caucasian origin for the Caucasian words.[2] If this is correct, then դամբուլ (dambul) is a Northeast Caucasian borrowing.
