From Proto-Indo-European *h₁wogʷʰ-eye-. Cognate with Latin voveo (to vow), votum (vow), Sanskrit वाघत् (vāghát, the institutor of a sacrifice), Ancient Greek εὔχομαι (eúkhomai, to vow).
