Old Armenian

Etymology

According to Ačaṙyan, from Georgian ბოზი (bozi, whore). That the Armenian word is borrowed from South Caucasian languages and not vice versa is confirmed by Laz ბოზო (bozo, girl). For the sense development “girl” → “whore”, compare French fille (girl; prostitute), German Dirne (girl; prostitute), Russian девка (devka, girlie; whore). Ačaṙyan remarks, that prostitutes were introduced into Armenia from Caucasus together with the word for them: compare how պոռնիկ (poṙnik) is from Greek and կաւատ (kawat) from Arabic.
