արծուի
Old Armenian
Alternative forms
- արծիւ (arciw) (post-classical)
Etymology
Two possibilities exist.
Diakonoff argues for an Urartian borrowing; compare Urartian [script needed] (Arṣibini), attested as a name of a horse, possibly meaning ‘Eagle’, and the theonym [script needed] (Arṣibedini).[1]
On the other hand, Martirosyan and Ačaṙyan consider the word to be of native origin, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂r̥ǵipyós, with Sanskrit ऋजिप्य (ṛjipyá, “darting along”) (an epithet of श्येन (śyená, “eagle”)), Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬟𐬌𐬌𐬋.𐬞𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬥𐬀 (ərəzifiiō.parəna, “having eagle-feathers”), Middle Persian ʾlwh (āluh, “eagle”), Manichaean Middle Persian ʾʾlwp (āluf, “eagle”) as cognates. In the latter case the Urartian word is a borrowing from Proto-Armenian; the element di- in [script needed] (Arṣibedini) could then be borrowed from Old Armenian դիք (dikʿ, “gods”).[2][3][4]
Noun
