Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan suggests derivation from the preposition առ (aṙ, at, by, in front) and the independently unattested root *պար (*par, foot), from Parthian 𐫛𐫀𐫅 (pāδ, foot). For a similar formation compare խոչընդոտն (xočʿəndotn).
