The origin is uncertain. Perhaps composed of the privative ան- (an-) + -հեթեթ (-hetʿetʿ), related to հայթեմ (haytʿem, to attach, to adjust, to put together); so basically meaning ‘un-shaped, un-formed, un-adjusted’.
