Etymology

From Persian الماس (almas). The spelling էլմաս (ēlmas) must be from Ottoman Turkish الماس (elmas). Ačaṙyan explains the -տ (-t) in the form ալմաստ (almast) as an inner-Armenian development, comparing such pairs as Սաղամաս (Sałamas)Սալմաստ (Salmast, Salmas), սուս (sus) → dialectal սուստ (sust, silent), պես (pes) → dialectal -պեստ (-pest, like), ռուս (ṙus) → dialectal ռուստ (ṙust, Russian). But compare Middle Persian ʾlmʾst' (almāst), Northern Kurdish almast, Zazaki almast.
