Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂leh₁wr̥. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἄλευρον (áleuron, flour). Related to աղամ (ałam, to grind).

Ačaṙean explains the genitive-dative ալեր (aler) by contraction from *ալեւեր (*alewer), the supposed regular genitive-dative of r-type ալեւր (alewr). See also գիւղ (giwł).
