The origin is uncertain.

According to some, inherited from Proto-Indo-European via pre-Armenian *azgdʰ-, and cognate with Sanskrit सक्थि (sákthi, “thigh, thigh-bone”), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬑𐬙𐬌‎ (haxti, “thigh”), Ancient Greek ἰσχίον (iskhíon, “hio-joint”).

Others compare to Ancient Greek ὀσφύς (osphús, “loins, lower part of the back”) and derive both from *h₃ésth₁ (“bone”) grown with the determinative *-dʰ-. Alternatively, both may derive from a Mediterranean–Pontic substrate word.
