Composed of өйрәк (öyräk, “duck”) + морон (moron, “nose”). Calque of Russian утконо́с (utkonós).
Compare with Tatar үрдәкборын (ürdäqborın, “platipus”), Uzbek oʻrdakburun (“platipus”), Azerbaijani ördəkburun (“platipus”) - these cognates are made up of components that are etymologically equivalent to those in the Bashkir term.
Also compare Kazakh үйректұмсық (üyrektumsıq, “platipus”), Uyghur ئۆردەكتۇمشۇق (ördektumshuq, “platipus”) - these two have a different second component, which is equivalent to Bashkie томшоҡ (tomšoq).
