ӕлутон
Ossetian
Alternative forms
- илӕтон (ilæton), ӕлотон (æloton) (Digor)
Etymology
According to Abaev, suffixed from *ӕлут (*ælut), borrowed from one of the descendants of Proto-Indo-European *h₂elut-, probably Germanic, more specifically Gothic *alut; compare Proto-Germanic *alu. The simplex *ӕлут (*ælut) is preserved in the Georgian borrowing ალუდი (aludi), ლუდი (ludi) and in the Scythian given name from Olbia Ἀλούταγος (Aloútagos), probably meaning “beer brewer”.
