From *soŋ-qï (“last, latest”), from Proto-Turkic *soŋ (“back; end; after”).

Cognate with Kazakh соңғы (soñğı), Kyrgyz соңку (soñku), Turkmen soňky, Tuvan соңгу (soŋgu, “last”).

Synchronously, һуң (huñ, “after, then; late”) +‎ -ғы (-ğï).
