From Proto-Turkic *yok-karɨ (upper; upward), from *yok (up, upward; upper; upland). *-karɨ is an aditive (directional) affix.

Cognate with Kazakh жоғары (joğarı), Kyrgyz жогору (cogoru), Uzbek yuqori, Azerbaijani yuxarı, Turkish yukarı (high. upper); Khakas чоғар (çoğar, West; upper), Yakut соҕуруу (soğuruu, South), etc.
