From Proto-Turkic *teb (“time; initial, early”).

Compare to Tatar тәү (täü, “initial, first”); Shor тем (tem, “time”), Tuvan теппиже (täppïžä, “ahead of time, before due time”).

Alternatively, Akhmetyanov suggests derivation from a hypothesized *täg (“initial, first”), citing Kyrgyz тек (tek, “origin, social background”).
