танау

Bashkir

Танау

Etymology

Cognate with Siberian Tatar танау (nose, nasal cavity), Khakas танаа (tanaa, nasal cavity, nostril), Yakut [script needed] (tanı̄, nostril).

Found also in Kalmyk хамрин тана (xamrin tana, nose wings), Buryat хамарай танаа (xamaraj tanaa, septum).

Due to narrow geographic distribution and lack of attestation in medieval sources, the ultimate provenance of the word cannot be ascertained.
