Etymology
From Proto-Turkic *čeküč (“hammer”), possibly from Middle Persian ckwc (čakuč, “hammer”).
The relationship between the Turkic and Persian etymons is murky and intricate, looks like there has been a two-way influence.
The Bashkir form looks anomalous in its last consonant (the regular Turkic form should have produced *sükes), and thus may be a separate adaptation of Persian چکش (čakoš, “hammer”).
Cognate with Tatar чүкеч (çükeç), Karachay-Balkar чёгюч, Nogai шоькиш (şökiş), Khakas сӧӧс (sӧӧs), Crimean Tatar çöküç, Azerbaijani çəkic, Turkish çekiç (“hammer”), Uzbek cho'kich (“pickaxe”).
