Etymology

From Middle Mongolian ᠰᠣᠭᠣᠩᠭᠢᠨ ᠠ (soɣongɣin-a). A loanword from Proto-Turkic *sogan (onion) augmented with a suffix resembling Middle Mongolian  ᠭᠠᠨᠠ (-ɣana),  ᠭᠡᠨᠡ (-gene) used in names of plants.[1][2]

Compare also Old Turkic 𐰣𐰍𐰽 (soɣun), Turkish soğan, Chuvash сухан (suhan) and Bashkir һуған (huğan).
