Etymology

Cognate with Southern Altai сарлык (sarlïk), Khakas сарлых (sarlıx); probably borrowed into Mongolic languages such as Mongolian сарлаг (sarlag).

Derived by Bazin from *сар (*sar, butter) + -лык (-lık), deriving the former from саржаг (saržag, butter). [1]

However Stachowski rejects this etymology, and connects the word to Southern Altai сарадак (saradak, a year old wapiti fawn) (and cognates), which he ultimately derives ultimately from Proto-Turkic *čara [2].

Thus the word would be a doublet of шары (šarı, ox), however Tuvan ш- (š-) is usually taken to be the regular reflex of Proto-Turkic *č- rather than Tuvan с- (s-).
