From про- (pro-) + мо́зглый (mózglyj, rotten; damp (of weather)), from мзга (mzga, rot, mold, damp weather), from Proto-Slavic *mъzga. Cognate with Ancient Greek μύδος (múdos, dampness, rot), Old Irish mosach (unclean), Low German mussig (dirty), Latvian mudas (rotten algae).
