привередливый

Russian

Etymology

From при- (pri-) + вере́дливый (verédlivyj, weak, effeminate), from ве́ред (véred, boil, abscess) + -ливый (-livyj), where ве́ред (véred) originally meant, and still dialectally means, "pain, harm"; compare doublet вред (vred). Sense development "too sensitive to pain" → "weak, effeminate" → "squeamish, picky".
