Etymology

From пе́ночка (pénočka, leaf warbler) + тенько́вка (tenʹkóvka, chiffchaff). The latter word is said to arise from тень-тинь-тянь-тень (tenʹ-tinʹ-tjanʹ-tenʹ), the sound of falling drops of rain, which its song slightly resembles.[1]
